Slips by the pool are among the most common accidents of the season on the Costa del Sol, and on hard stone the consequences are rarely minor. The surfaces that lend a pool area its elegance are often the very same ones that become dangerous the moment they get wet.<\/span><\/p>

The reassuring fact is that this is one of the easiest problems to fix in the home, and it can be done without altering the appearance of the floor in any way.<\/span><\/p>

Why elegant surfaces can be dangerous<\/span><\/h3>

Polished marble, honed stone, porcelain and glazed ceramic all share one characteristic: a smooth surface that offers no place for water to run off and very little grip for bare feet. The conditions of an ordinary summer\u2019s day exacerbate the problem. Sun cream and body oils leave a fine residue, a thin film of algae can form in shaded and damp corners, and constant splashing keeps the whole area wet. A grip that felt entirely secure in the morning can disappear by the afternoon, and the change is easy to overlook until someone slips.<\/span><\/p>

Anyone can lose their footing, but the consequences are not borne equally. Children move quickly, rarely look down and seldom regain their balance in time. Older guests and relatives are more likely to suffer serious injury from a fall. And everyone who leaves the pool does so with wet feet, stepping onto the most slippery part of the entire terrace. What an anti-slip treatment does<\/span><\/h3>

An anti-slip treatment improves the grip of a floor when it is wet, without leaving any visible residue. Rather than forming a coating on the stone, it works at a microscopic level, creating a fine texture within the surface that allows water to disperse and provides the sole of the foot with a firm grip. When the floor is dry, it feels exactly as it did before. When it is wet, the improvement is immediate.<\/span><\/p>

For this project, we use FILAGRIP, the anti-slip treatment from FILA Surface Care Solutions, and we are certified to apply their products. It is designed specifically for this purpose: to increase the slip resistance of floors around swimming pools, in bathrooms and on terraces, whilst leaving their appearance unchanged.<\/span><\/p>

This is the most common concern, and an understandable one. In a high-end property, the floor forms part of the design, and no owner wants a cloudy film, a change in colour or an artificial sheen on their marble. A treatment applied correctly produces none of these effects. There is no visible layer to peel off, no change in colour and no loss of finish. The marble continues to look like marble. The only change is in the way the surface feels underfoot when wet.<\/span><\/p>

The pool surround is the obvious priority, yet the same problem arises wherever water comes into contact with a smooth floor. Steps and staircases, both indoors and outdoors, are a common weak point, as a wet edge is easily misjudged. Bathrooms and wet rooms benefit equally, as do terraces, entrances and any threshold exposed to rain. Treating these areas together, in a single visit, is usually the most sensible approach, and it ensures the whole property provides a consistent underfoot feel.<\/span><\/p>

Because the treatment alters the surface itself, the product and method must be precisely suited to the material. The correct approach for porcelain differs from that for soft marble, and a mistake can etch or dull a floor of considerable value. What the treatment involves<\/span><\/h3>

The process itself is straightforward and far less disruptive than owners tend to expect. Following the discreet test, the surface is thoroughly cleaned, the treatment is applied and left to take effect for a controlled period determined by the material, and the floor is then rinsed and dried. Most pool surrounds are completed in a single visit, and the area can be used again shortly afterwards. There is no dust, no noise and no prolonged closure of the terrace, which is particularly important when the work is carried out during the busy season. We also advise on the simplest way to maintain performance: a consistent, pH-neutral cleaning routine that preserves grip without damaging the stone.<\/span><\/p>

How long it lasts<\/span><\/h3>

A professionally applied anti-slip treatment lasts for years under normal use. Its longevity depends mainly on the level of foot traffic and how the floor is cleaned. Acidic products shorten its lifespan, so pH-neutral cleaners are the best choice and protect both the treatment and the stone beneath. When the grip gradually diminishes over time, the treatment can simply be reapplied without disrupting the floor.
